Krishna Janmashtmi-2020

Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated as the birthday of Hindu God Krishna. Krishna is said to be the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Krishna is also the 8th son of Devaki and Vasudev, which shows the special importance of number 8. That is the reason Janmashtami is celebrated on the 8th day of bhadrapad month as per the Hindu calendar. Therefore the occasion is known as Janam- Ashtami.

Lord Krishna was born in the dark fortnight of Krishna paksha in Mathura in UP. This festival is celebrated as Krishna's birthday and the victory of good over evil. It is a festival of the love of all types. This festival brings together all family members, relatives, friends who join together to celebrate.  Krishna has many names to name a few Kanha, Murlimanohar, Makhan chor, Nandlala, Govinda, Banke Bihari, Shyam, and many more. The way people see him they call him with that name. That is the beauty of unconditional love.

Many tales are also linked to this festival. Birth of Kanha, Kansa (uncle of Kanha) wanted to kill Kanha over an akashvani which said Kansas death will be by the Devaki and Vasudev’s 8th son. Soon after this announcement Kansa put his sister and her husband in a cage and killed all the newborns from his own hand. So after the birth of the 8th son of Devaki,  Vasudev took him across the Yamuna to Gokul to protect him from Kansa, where Krishna was raised by his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda. Yashoda was unaware of the fact, loved Krishna like any other mother. The mother-son duo tale is so delighted and lovable that it makes you fall in love with them.

On the day of celebration of Janmashtami, the statue of Krishna is properly cleaned and decorated with new clothes, ornaments, flowers, and leaves. It is kept inside a cradle to symbolize Krishna's birth. Many themes are used to decorate the temple. Sometimes decorated with flowers, sometimes with toys, balloons, some put the theme of Gokul and dress like villagers, some do Yashoda-Krishna role play. Believers do fasting for a full day and spend a full night singing and dancing on bhajans (devotional songs). The reason for the celebration held at night is Krishna’s birth at fortnight. Post the offering and pooja people do, they offer sweets and many other things to God and the leftovers are distributed to the people. Many games are also played that day and the next day, to name a few Dahi handi, role play, song, dance, kite flying, fancy dress, and many more. This year the muhurat of pooja is 12:05 am to 12:45 am on 12th August. The fasting will be broken the next day when Ashtami is over.

Here’s Wishing Everyone a very happy Shri Krishna Janmashtmi :)
